FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 1 OCTOBER 2015

MAW BACKS CORBYN’S DECLARATION THAT ‘I WON’T PRESS NUCLEAR BUTTON’

The Movement for the Abolition of War has given full support to Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn for saying he would not be prepared to launch a nuclear attack if he were prime minister.

MAW says Mr Corbyn’s declaration marks ‘an outbreak of humanity and common sense’ which should be backed by all those who care for the future of the world.

Asked on the BBC whether, as prime minister, he would be prepared to press the nuclear button Mr Corbyn answered ‘no’.

MAW has called on the British people to support Mr Corbyn’s position and campaign for the Trident missile system not to be renewed.

MAW chair Tim Devereux said: ‘No sensible person who cares for the future of humanity would be prepared to launch a devastating nuclear attack which would kill millions of people and signal the end of life on earth.

‘Mr Corbyn’s position is ethical and humane and the only sensible response to the horrific devastation the use of nuclear weapons would cause.

‘We call on the British people to back Mr Corbyn in his principled position.

‘His statement marks an outbreak of humanity and common sense about Britain’s use of weapons of mass destruction.

‘It is time to end Britain’s shameful nuclear policy and take a principled decision not to renew Trident.’
